Autumn in Concert

In Autumn in Concert: Music of Fall, Marc Shulgold returns with an accessible, visually rich program that explores how composers and songwriters have captured the many colors and moods of the season. Through guided listening, composer stories, historical context, performance clips, and carefully chosen video imagery, guests will experience music that is joyful, reflective, dramatic, wistful, and deeply human.

The program includes selections dating back more than a century, including a 1908 waltz that was played aboard the Titanic, along with songs of tender self-pity made memorable by Edith Piaf and Jimmy Durante. Guests will hear music from Antonio Vivaldi’s famous The Four Seasons, written in the early 1700s by the brilliant Italian Baroque master, as well as a wistful piano piece by Tchaikovsky composed for the October issue of a music magazine intended for amateur players at home — preferably those in a sorrowful mood.

The program also includes more exuberant visions of autumn, including an ecstatic “Bacchanal” from Alexander Glazunov’s full-length ballet The Seasons. Giuseppe Verdi offers another dance-inspired autumn moment from his own Four Seasons ballet music, created for Paris Opera audiences. Listeners will also encounter the aching beauty of Brahms’ “Late Autumn” and a touching scene from Edvard Grieg’s music for Peer Gynt, where summer has turned to fall and a beloved woman is left waiting and lamenting.

About the Speaker: A native of Los Angeles, Marc Shulgold was a music journalist at the Los Angeles Times, and for the Rocky Mountain News. He taught music history at the University of Denver's adult enrichment program for over 20 years and is a contributor to Opera Magazine among other publications. Marc is a program annotator for University of Colorado concerts and a longtime speaker at the Vail summertime music festival.

Ticket price for the Music & Nature series is $10 - proceeds benefit conservation, park enhancement, and nature education in Geauga County through the Foundation for Geauga Parks.
