The Geauga Park District has officially opened the Tulip Trail, a scenic new 1.2-mile loop trail available for both equestrians and hikers in the West Woods in Russell Township.
Funding the Vision
The Tulip Trail was brought to life through a generous $57,000 grant from the Foundation for Geauga Parks (FGP) Bridle Trail Fund. Established in 2010 in partnership with the Geauga County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman’s Council (GOHC), the fund supports the development and upkeep of public bridle trails throughout the county. “This latest project is a proud milestone in supporting outdoor recreation and local conservation, enabling more residents to enjoy and explore our scenic bridle trail network,” said Christine Davidson, Executive Director of FGP.
About the Trail
One of the trail’s most striking features is its namesake — the second largest tulip tree in Ohio. Standing approximately 175 feet tall, with a crown spread of nearly 90 feet and a trunk circumference of over 15 feet, this giant was the 2022 winner of the Geauga Soil & Water Conservation District’s Big Tree Contest. Beyond this impressive tree, the Tulip Trail winds through a diverse landscape of mature forest, early successional growth, and a fragrant pine plantation that provides an excellent habitat for wildlife including red foxes, white-tailed deer, barred owls, and an abundance of songbirds.
While snowmobiles and bicycles are not permitted, the trail welcomes both hikers and horseback riders. Visitors can access the trail from two main points:
Affelder House (15139 Chillicothe Road): A short connection via the Falls Trail and Affelder Link Trail.
The West Woods Nature Center: A longer hike of approximately 2.5 miles to the trailhead.
A Collaborative Effort
The creation of Tulip Trail was made possible by strong community collaboration. Planning began in July 2023, when the Geauga Park District consulted with both GOHC and FGP to shape the vision for a new bridle trail. Michelle Rossman, GOHC Membership Chair and Trail Liaison, played a key role in providing guidance on trail design elements such as width, surface material, and canopy clearance. “The footing is perfect for horses—no large gravel, just limestone screenings over a well-draining base,” Rossman noted. “There’s a section that feels like a pine-scented tunnel—it’s just spectacular.” The Park District’s own construction crew brought the vision to life, building boardwalks and bridges to enhance both durability and beauty. The project team included biologist Paul Pira, Chief Naturalist John Kolar, Deputy Director Matt McCue, Dan McConnaughy, and Isaiah Shipman, who oversaw construction on-site.
Growing Geauga’s Trail Network
The Tulip Trail expands The West Woods’ existing 4.8 miles of bridle trails, further cementing the park’s status as a premier equestrian destination in Geauga County. Countywide, Geauga Park District now offers more than 27 miles of bridle trails across eight parks. Whether you’re saddling up or lacing up your boots, the new Tulip Trail offers a refreshing way to connect with nature, wildlife, and the rich forested heritage of Geauga County — one scenic loop at a time.
